How to use it
This screening estimate is for adults aged 18 and over. It must be considered alongside population, body composition, clinical history, and professional advice.
- Confirm the adult age and select metric or US customary units.
- Enter height and weight within the documented adult ranges.
- Read the one-decimal BMI, reference band, exclusions, and medical disclaimer.
Worked example
- Input
Age 30; 170 cm; 70 kg
- Output
BMI 24.2; WHO global adult middle reference band
BMI = 70 ÷ 1.70². The band is a population reference, not a diagnosis.
Method and definitions
- BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in metres squared.
- WHO adult reference: below 18.5 underweight; 18.5–<25 middle band; 25–<30 overweight; 30+ obesity.
- WHO evidence notes that risk can occur at lower BMI in Asian populations and varies within those populations.
Limits and edge cases
- Do not use this adult reference for children, pregnancy, eating-disorder diagnosis, highly muscular athletes, or conditions affecting height or body fluid.
- BMI does not measure body fat or distinguish fat from muscle.
- Local clinical guidance and population-specific action points may differ.
